Data mining to reduce energy use at UK paper mill

Energy cost savings of £335k a year have been identified at a UK paper mill, with equivalent carbon dioxide savings of 5,800 tonnes. The payback period is 0.9 years.

The opportunities have been discovered by analysing data from the paper machine using data mining techniques.

The savings are achieved by:

implementing new set points for steam systems

improving control of machine feed conditions

investments in central power and utilities

real time performance monitoring

optimising rates

raising awareness of optimum operating conditions

The work is being rolled out to other mills in the Group.
